Problems Facing Kenyatta National Hospital
Walking through the hallway I could feel already sick. The place looked pathetic and disorderly. The air was filled with a mixture of different odors; there was the smell of blood, medicine sweat and other different kinds of perfumes.
The places was chaotic, the nurses were up and down, some rushing patients and some rushing documents to their respective departments.  Along the corridors, there were a few benches with patients, some looked tired and some looked like they were in so much pain. Halima Kabibi had to say this about the hospital, as she was my first encounter in the hospital.
“The hospital lacks some kind of order. I have been seating here with my daughter for almost 5hours without been attended to. “
She sounded very angry and irritated; it was clear enough she was not satisfied with the services provided by the hospital. She was just among the few who were complaining, I interviewed several others and they were complaining about the same thing. Some had some past experience and they were telling me that the day might even end without them being attended to.
Moving on to the wards, I was shocked beyond words with what I had discovered and seen. I found not one but many other patients sharing a single bed.   This was something that was really devastating. It was not the kind of hospital I imagined I would walk into.
“We have been sharing the bed for almost a week now. We were told that we have to bear with the current situation as to there are many other patients, due to the recent attacks “.
Mr. Kamau told me these as he stared at me hopelessly. In deed he did not have the upper hand to this matter. It’s very bad to see how people are treated especially the sick. They should be treated with utmost care and humility. He also added that at times he was the one who was taking his friend to the washrooms during the night, due to lack of enough nurses. Some of the family members who were there with them said there was also some kind of biasness.
“While were admitting Mr. Kamau, we were at first asked if we were going to pay in cash or through our insurance company. After we said through insurance company, we were told people with no money have to wait for the rest who have, so we were not served until we had to become persistent. “
Kenyatta Hospital is known for popping up in the media not only for serious staff shortages, but shortages of other facilities including drugs, wheelchairs, beds and stretchers. Despite all that the hospital has been working had to acquire additional facilities within limited stretchers.
“The government is trying as much as they can despite all this problems you have seen around. Recently we have received new machines for the ICU department, new wheelchairs and beds. We are also receiving funds and support from local and international sponsors. On the issue of inadequate personnel, nurses and doctors are in place but they will officially start working next month.”
Doctor Cyrus Wachira assured me as I was making my final laps around the hospital .Only time will tell if things will change.
